Four exhibitions in Ontario,
from June 2nd to August 12th

‘Turning On Furnishings, 2000’  will be the first comprehensive display of Canada’s finest contemporary woodturning talent and an event more broadly and eloquently celebrated than ever before in the history of Canadian woodturning.

‘Turning On Furnishings, 2000’  will showcase the skills and creativity of Canadian woodturners at the dawn of the new millennium. Timed to coincide with the annual conference of the Furniture Society in Toronto in June 2000, this is a great opportunity to showcase woodturning as an important and vibrant community within the field of creative woodworking.

Selected and gathered from coast to coast, thirty-two of Canada’s finest established and emerging creative woodturners and designer/makers will be represented through eighty-three exciting pieces.

Goals

Originally to be hosted by a single public gallery, it quickly became apparent to Mark Salusbury, the principle organizer, that more space and involvement were required. The exhibition had the potential to be a positive experience culturally, aesthetically, historically and commercially as well as being an example for future such displays. The goals for the Exhibition, beyond exposure for the individual designer/makers, became:

- To expose, in as many forms and styles as possible, skilled Canadian woodturning talent and creativity from coast to coast

- To celebrate the craft of ‘woodturning’ or ‘lathework’ as a ‘community’ within the larger field of creative woodworking

- To showcase the aesthetic and design potential of lathe turned ‘craft’ and ‘artworks’ as functional and decorative furniture and furnishings to enhance any environment

- To expose Canadian woodturning craftspeople and their fine creations to new markets at a peak period of interest

- To encourage future, similar exhibitions of lathe turned creativity in galleries across the country, further enhancing the public awareness and appreciation of this still developing art form.

Publications

Documentation of the exhibition will be produced in a special collaboration between the ‘Turning On Furnishings, 2000’ Organizing Committee, the ‘Canadian Woodturners Association’ (CWA) and the ‘Wood Turning Center’ (WTC) of Philadelphia, PA. The CWA will provide funding plus promotion within the Canadian woodturning community. The ‘Turning on Furnishings, 2000’ Organizing Committee and the WTC, one of the worlds most active and notable promoters of woodturning in all its forms, will work together to create two fine collectible publications celebrating the event.

A full catalogue will be produced and made available nation-wide and beyond. In addition, a special issue of the Wood Turning Center's journal, ‘Turning Points’ will be produced in time for WTC member and general distribution just prior to our exhibition openings. The works of our fine turners and designer/makers, showcased in the ‘Turning On Furnishings, 2000’ exhibition, will be in the hands of over 3000 interested readers worldwide.
